Public Health Surveillance

  • Harvard Medical School’s Department of Population Medicine (DPM) created the Electronic Medical Record Support for Public Health (ESP) platform. ESP organizes and analyzes EMR data for events of public health interest and automatically transmits electronic case reports or aggregate population summaries
  • ESP installations are currently operational in Massachusetts and Ohio, providing live, automated notifiable disease reporting from a population of over 1 million patients
  • ESP also provides data that is incorporated into the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention National Influenza-Like Illness Surveillance Program
  • Commonwealth provides informatics services to DPM to support deployment and enhancement of the ESP platform
